A silver heron stands in moonlit water: only buds, only light, only a cool subtlety.

## History

'Silver needles with white down' are made only from unopened buds covered with thin silvery hairs. Minimal intervention: the leaf is withered in sun or shade and dried to low moisture. Place and year of ageing decide almost everything. With age the bright metallic note recedes, and honey, dry herbs and warm wood appear — old 'silver needles' are considered medicinal.

> In the Fudin mountains there lived a girl named Lan Gu; her brother had been carried off by a terrible illness, and the only cure was a leaf from a legendary bush at the summit of Mount Dong Mu. The valley sent young men up — none returned. Lan Gu went alone, reached the summit and gathered the buds. On the way back she scattered seeds — and from them grew the bushes of Bai Hao Yin Zhen, which now give their tea to all.

## Terroir

500–900 m. weathered granite and loose red clay rich in quartz. the closeness of the sea gives mild winters and humid misty air; the nights are cool even in summer. The standard is the Fuding 'Da Bai Hao' from Mount Taimu; Zhenghe gives a denser honey profile. The best buds are picked in a two-week window — usually at the end of March.

## Leaf

- **dry leaf:** even silver-green needles entirely covered with thin white down; in the hand dry and light, smelling of meadow hay and a thin freshness
- **warmed:** the warmed bud — ripe melon, acacia honey, a thin note of warmed porcelain, a faint lunar 'cool'
- **after pour:** after the infusion — white melon, acacia, a thin mineral coolness, a light note of fresh hay
- **taste:** moonlight, ripe melon, acacia honey, a cool minerality; in aged ones — baked pear and a thin wood
- **finish:** thin, very long, leaving in the throat a cool sweet mineral note, as if you were drinking cold water from a mountain spring

## Properties

- **TCM:** cool by nature, yin; clears heat, moistens the lungs, sends fire downward, calms the shen; traditionally a 'children's' tea and a febrifuge
- **Modern:** very high antioxidant and theanine content, minimal roast products; gently supports immunity and sleep, considered one of the lightest teas for the nervous system
- **Cha qi:** thin, cool, spreading across shoulders and shoulder blades; felt as a 'cooling' of the head and chest
- **Caffeine:** low to moderate (25–40 mg), gentle
