How to read a Chinese tea label
Start with the name, ingredients, origin, producer, weight and dates. Then read the harvest, processing and storage details. A detailed label helps you ask useful questions; it does not prove authenticity.

品名 means product name; 配料 or 配料表, ingredients; 产地, origin; 生产商, producer; 净含量, net weight; 生产日期, production date; 保质期, shelf life; and 贮存条件, storage conditions. Wording and fields vary between markets. The producer’s address is not necessarily where the leaves were grown.
Separate recipe, batch and date
7542 is a well-known Menghai raw pu-erh recipe number, not a production year. Its traditional interpretation links “75” to a 1975 recipe, “4” to the blend’s leaf grade and “2” to Menghai Tea Factory. It is not a taste score out of ten or a complete list of the blend’s components. Not every pu-erh has such a number, and not every four-digit code follows this scheme. Look for the actual date and batch separately.
Check what the date refers to
Production and harvest dates are not necessarily the same. Pu-erh can be pressed from older maocha, so both years can be useful. Check the wrapper, box and enclosed information; for a sample, ask for a photograph of the original packaging. 内飞 is a small label pressed into the tea; 内票 is a loose enclosed leaflet. Neither necessarily carries all the dates you need. Leaf colour, old-looking paper and aroma cannot reliably establish the year.
Read harvest and processing terms
明前 means picked before Qingming, around 4–5 April; 雨前 means before Guyu, around 19–21 April. The exact dates vary by year. 头春 means the first spring harvest. These terms do not guarantee better flavour; picking times also depend on place, weather and cultivar. For oolong, look for 品种, cultivar; 产区, growing area; and 焙火, roast. 轻火 usually means light roast, 中火 medium, and 足火 a full or sufficient roast. They are not a universal temperature scale.
Check what supports the claim
特级 means special grade. It can refer to an actual category within a standard, as with Longjing, but it does not rank every tea against every other tea. Ask which standard applies. 古树 means old trees and 单株 means single-tree material; the words alone prove neither origin nor superior taste. If organic certification matters to you, check the certifier and whether the certificate is valid for that product. “Imperial” or “eco-friendly” does not replace this evidence.
Questions and answers
What if the translation app gives an odd result?
Translate one small section at a time and keep the original characters for reference. Double-check dates, ingredients and units: 500克 means 500 g. If the wording is still unclear, ask the seller before drawing conclusions about age or quality.
Does a 7542 label prove authenticity?
No. It identifies the claimed recipe, but the number can be copied. Check the supplier and batch; if the producer offers an authentication system, use its official channel.
